The important skill of reading is practiced at home and at school. Eliseo C Felix (ECF) Elementary educators were looking for ways to assure students had books at home to improve their reading skills. HCSS Foundation partnered with ECF staff and created the Wednesday Book Club. Every Wednesday 20 second graders and 20 third graders have the opportunity to get 3 books of their choice to take home and read. After reading 20 minutes at home each night, students complete a task from their Reading Log.
Every Wednesday, students get rewarded for completing their reading log with a treat and select 3 new books to read. They also get to read with a volunteer! HCSS Volunteers listen to students read, talk to them about the story and help them decode hard words.
HCSS Foundation is grateful to our donors, whose donations helped us purchase books for the ECF Wednesday Book Club. Donations of $15 provides a chapter book and $7 provides a single story book.
A HUGE thank you to our volunteer readers: Fred, Cheryl, Jennifer, Roz, Trinity and Bernadette as well as members of the Goodyear Police Department.
